Database Search Training for Research Interns
Sylvia Liu, a PhD candidate in the ALLL lab, provided a 2.5 hour training on database searching for Web of Science (Core Collection), ERIC, IEEE Xplore, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. Sylvia provided step-by-step instruction on how to carry out advanced searches and export results to EndNote. In addition, she emphasised why double-checking settings, use of capitalisation, and other wildcards are important. Several “hacks” were relayed including how to keep screenshots of searches for convenient backtracking. The training ended with a short Q&A session. Sylvia plans to provide a follow up training to clarify particular search feature of these databases as well as introduce how to go about searching the SCOPUS database.
