Title: An Introduction to Corpus Linguistics within Language Education
Abstract
This hands-on workshop introduces corpus linguistics as a method for educational research to those with limited or no prior experience with the field. The session provides a brief overview of the core theoretical and methodological basis of corpus linguistics, and its history in language learning research and applied linguistics in particular. Participants will then be guided through activities that use a corpus (i.e. a digital pool of language data) for insights into language that have educational relevance. In particular, this session will focus on vocabulary in second language learning, and the core corpus linguistics’ concepts of the importance of frequency, dispersion in the language environment, and the context of use. These are all key variables that affect acquisition and need to be considered in teaching and curriculum/materials development. No previous experience with programming or natural language processing is required for this session.
